The chapter surveys 19th- and 20th-century utopian communities, from Bellamy's fictional future Boston to Howard's Garden City, and from Italian industrial villages like Crespi d'Adda to Olivetti's Canavese communities. Each experiment reimagines collective life through cooperation, equality and planned urban form, culminating in the ambiguous modern phenomenon of gated communities as privatised ideal cities.
