The chapter examines the decline of utopian thought in the 20th century, marked by war, totalitarianism and political disillusionment. Thinkers such as Mannheim, Bloch and Lefebvre defend utopia's enduring value as a force of anticipation and hope, while Calvino and Popper express deep scepticism. The chapter argues that utopian impulses survive in everyday desires and collective imagination, resurging briefly but powerfully in the 1968 movements.
