From Data to Images: OpenRefine for Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons

  • Elena Martellotta

Many cultural institutions are joining the open data movement by making their collections and archives publicly available, in line with Wikimedia’s mission to provide free access to human knowledge. Through Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons they share structured data on artworks, events and historical figures, fostering research and collaboration. The pilot project “Progetto Dati Lombardia” was created, starting from a public-domain dataset on cultural heritage buildings in Lombardy. Using OpenRefine and Quickstatements, the data were processed and uploaded to Wikidata, minimizing information loss. At the same time, the Egyptian Museum of Turin released both data and images, linking them to Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. These initiatives show how institutions can enhance and disseminate global cultural heritage.
