The chapter analyses the major dystopian works of the 20th century, focusing on Orwell's 1984 and Huxley's Brave New World. Both novels depict societies where totalitarianism and industrial control crush freedom and individuality. Drawing on lived political experience, they expose how utopian ideals can degenerate into oppression, reflecting the century's traumatic encounter with totalitarianism, mass production and technological control.
