Da ospedale psichiatrico a sede universitaria: il progetto di riconversione di Enzo Zacchiroli

  • Luca Quattrocchi

The essay analyses the project to convert Palazzo San Niccolò, the central building of the former psychiatric hospital, into a university campus. The commission was assigned in 1997 to the Bolognese architect Enzo Zacchiroli, chosen for his sensitivity in working in historically layered contexts and for his admired affection for the city of Siena. The work was completed in 2006, and the result combines due respect for the existing buildings with the addition of new, highly modern structures.
