This chapter introduces the challenges posed by cybercrime and by a digital society under siege, while providing a general overview of the national and European regulatory framework governing cybersecurity. Emphasis is placed on the vulnerabilities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), caused especially by the structural shortage of resources available for cyber protection.
