This paper presents the new Wikibase instance, The Library of Polybius, whose aim is to systematically collect and analyse data and metadata of the citations of ancient Greek writers, namely “lost” historians, in The Histories of Polybius. The database includes the original Greek text of the citations, metadata about the quoted authors (e.g., name, provenance, period) and their works (e.g., title, number of books, content), as well as references to the relevant sections of The Histories (book, chapter, paragraph). It also records the linguistic elements of the citations (e.g., the names of the quoted authors, nouns referring to their works, and verbs introducing citations). Once completed, the Wikibase will be queried through the SPARQL Query Service in order to shed light on Polybius’ citation practice.
