On 1 February 1945, while the war was still raging in the northern regions, the Bonomi government issued a decree extending voting rights to women. Especially if set in the long term and in the context of feminist and suffragist tradition to which several generations of women belong, this measure marks a turning point and alters the established gender division which, by assigning women to the private sphere, excludes them from the political one. Moving beyond the debate (often controversial) on a ‘granted’ vote, this paper, taking into account the transnational context, aims to provide an overview of the various positions expressed on the issue, the choices made by the mass parties, the leading role played by women’s political associations, and the anti-suffragism expressed not only in the satirical press
