The “Giardino e Casa di Chiaja” of Paolo Spìnola was purchased in 1531 by Cardinal Pompeo Colonna, and passed after his death to Andrea Sbarra and then to Ottavio Farnese. In 1544, the property was purchased by García Álvarez de Toledo, who undertook major work on the surrounding gardens. Inherited by his son Pedro in 1577, by the end of the century the villa had been expanded with a new wing to the north, the same one converted in 1653 into a ‘Cavallerizza’. Remaining in the de Toledo family possession, the main residence underwent a radical renovation in the early 19th century by Pietro Valente.
