Holberg's Description of the Battle of Gemauerthof (On the Question of the Russian Sources of his Introduction to the History of the Most Notable European Countries). This article suggests a Russian source for an episode in the chapter About Sweden in Introduction to the History of the Most Notable European Countries by the classic of Danish literature, the historian Ludvig Holberg. This text describes the battle between the Russians and the Swedes at Gemauerthof in July 1705. It relates that after a successful attack on Mitava, the Russians engaged a large detachment of Swedes under General Lewenhaupt but were defeated as a result of a reckless act by Colonel Ignatiev. Analysis reveals that Holberg followed the text of Russian reports on the battle of Mur-Myz. In the Danish version, the Russian Colonel Ignatiev is a prominent figure, here named Ignatius, and is among several people with this name who attracted Holberg's attention, including the "mad" Ignatius of Loyola.
