The volume collects the proceedings of the conference held on March 12, 2004 at Sala Teatro “Il Momento” in Empoli. The conference aimed to deepen the significant aspects linked to the presence of the University of Florence in the Empolese-Valdelsa territory, where the Faculties of Agriculture, Architecture, Economics, Engineering, Medicine and Surgery and Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences are present. This presence responds to a plan for the gradual consolidation of the University in the vast metropolitan area of the city of Florence, according to a logic of functional settlement connected to the specific economic and social needs of the territory.
