Le collezioni egee del Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Firenze

The collection of Aegean exhibits in the National Archaeological Museum of Florence is of the greatest significance in terms of its richness and variety. The richness is illustrated by the quantity and value of the objects conserved, and the variety by a provenance and chronology of the artefacts that embrace pre-classical Aegean history practically in its entirety.
This complete edition is organised on the basis of four main areas of provenance and production of the materials (Crete, Continental Greece, the Cyclades and Rhodes). The formation of the Florentine Aegean collections dates largely to the early twentieth century, and was the felicitous result of a combination of different circumstances. The most important of these was the commitment of Luigi Adriano Milani, Director of the nascent Royal Museum, to whom we owe the initial stimulus for a museum collection that could assume exemplary importance and respond to educational requirements.

Anna Margherita Jasink lectures on Aegean Civilisations at the University of Florence, dealing with historical and philological aspects of the Aegean and near-eastern world. She is currently running a research project in the Kouris valley (Cyprus). Among her works we would mention the monographs addressing issues related to regional history (La Cilicia, Firenze 1990; Gli stati neo-ittiti, Pavia 1995). Her most recent work deals with Cretan hieroglyphic seals (Cretan Hieroglyphic Seals, Pisa-Roma 2009).

Luca Bombardieri is a researcher at the University of Florence. He has conducted excavations and archaeological reconnaissance campaigns in Cyprus and in Syria, working for many years alongside Paolo Emilio Pecorella in Tell Barri (Hassake, Siria). He is in charge of the Erimi-Laonin tou Porakou excavation project (Kouris, Cyprus). Among his publications we would mention numerous contributions dealing with historical aspects of the technology and material production in Cyprus, Anatolia, Syria and Mesopotamia in the pre-classical era. The monograph Pietre da macina, macine per mulini (III-I Millennio a.C.) , Oxford 2010, is shortly to be published.
