La città del lavoro is a program book. Nowadays, Fordism, with its large factories, is declining both in Italy and in the other Western societies. But Taylorism, which in the 20th century was also accepted by state socialism and by left-wing and communist culture, is not facing any crisis. Work continues to be largely hetero-directed, reduced to ware and to thing, an appendix and slave of technique, while left-wing parties are unable to give an adequate response to neoliberalism, technological processes and the ongoing globalization. Rethinking the Left means placing work at the centre of politics as a right of constitutional citizenship; and, above all, it means affirming democracy and freedom in work, so that the human people can carry out their own life and knowledge project.
