Il mondo musulmano e i volti della guerra

Conflitti, politica e comunicazione nella storia dell'islam
  • Alessandro Vanoli,

Islam, war: the complex relationship between these two elements has a long past and an infinite series of historically determined forms. This book investigates some traces of it, captured in places and times very distant from each other, but united by the same point of view: how war and its representations have been translated at the level of institutions and political legitimacy. Hence, various investigations follow: how the Caliphate of Muslim Spain used the practice of war to reconstruct its political memory; how the idea of a "just war" was able to circulate for centuries in the Mediterranean, passing from Greek and Latin writings to Arabic texts and Hebrew translations; or how the recent Republic of the Maldives has been able to reconstruct its Islamic identity thanks to the fabulous story of an ancient Arab traveller.
