The article explores the challenges and opportunities of a long-lived society, with a focus on Italy, where life expectancy is among the highest in the world. It examines the impact of ageing on social structures, intergenerational relationships, and generational equity. Emphasis is placed on the urgency of adopting a positive view of longevity, introducing concepts like malleable age and prospective age, which help counter age-based stereotypes and foster stronger ties between generations. The vital role of grandparents in children’s socialization and the influence of family relationships on quality of life are discussed. The article also addresses emerging social inequalities and the need for policies that ensure greater generational fairness. Finally, it calls for reflection on memory, courage, and patience as essential values for building an inclusive and sustainable society capable of meeting future challenges.
