L'India a Firenze 1860-1900
  • Filipa Lowndes Vicente,

Other Orientalisms analyses various forms of knowledge about India through the circulation of people, ideas, knowledge, images and objects between Florence and Bombay.
In the second half of the nineteenth century Florence became an important centre for studies on India, manifested in the organisation of exhibitions, museums, journals and international conferences. Inspired by the relationship between two Indianists – the Italian Angelo De Gubernatis, a teacher of Sanskrit in Florence and the Goan José Gerson da Cunha, a physician and historian in Bombay – this book discloses an India that emerged from different places, peopled by a multiplicity of voices. The institutional, intellectual and museum experience of Florentine orientalism, albeit peripheral, further enhances the debate on knowledge and colonial power that has engaged social and human sciences in recent decades.

Filipa Lowndes Vicente (Lisbon, 1972) is a history researcher at the Instituto de Ciências Sociais (ICS) of the University of Lisbon. She completed a PhD at the University of London (Goldsmiths College) in 2000 with a thesis that was later transformed into a book Viagens e Exposições: D. Pedro V na Europa do Século XIX (which won the Victor de Sá prize in Portugal in 2004). She then lived in Florence for several years where she carried out research for a number of articles and for this book, published in Portugal in 2009 and in India in English in 2012.
Another of her strands of research – women artists – inspired the book recently published in Lisbon, A Arte sem História. Mulheres e Cultura artística (séculos XVI-XX). The chapter dealing with Italian women painters of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was also drafted during her long stay in Florence.
