He essay focuses on Metastasio’s Ezio and its context. It poses the question whether Mira de Amescua’s El ejemplo mayor de la desdicha and the historical character of Belisarius were part of the inspiration sources Metastasio may have considered while composing his libretto, looking at the unprecedented success of the Spanish play to affirm once more his reformed views on dramma per musica by presenting a quite modified version of the plot. Thus, Ezio constituted another determining step towards the role and dignity of poeta cesareo.
