Given that a text is also a book, an object, the correct study of the reception of Spanish dramatic literature in France makes it necessary to look at the diffusion and penetration of the Spanish book. This is what we will propose in this contribution. We will begin by recalling some characteristics of the book world in Spain, especially those related to the theatrical text. These observations will then allow us to better understand the difficulties that affected the circulation of theatrical printed matter, although its limited presence in 17th century France is compensated by the strong dynamism of translations. These, together with the Spanish originals available in France, constitute the so-called “Spanish book”, i.e. a varied corpus from which French writers could draw their inspiration.
