A history of the social sciences over the last 100 years cannot ignore the relationship between scientific research and intellectual and academic debate on the one hand, and political events and ideologies on the other. In the broader context, Demography occupies a special place: it was born from official Statistics and then developed in the first half of the twentieth century, until it became autonomous. In the period between the two wars, Statistics and Demography continued their strong development, expansion and innovation and many Italian scholars achieved scientifically valid results. Their affiliation with the Faculty of Political Science and the Department of Statistics places the institutions at the forefront of Italian social science.
