Jacinto Cordeiro (1606?-1646) was a Portuguese playwright who worked on comedia nueva in the Spanish language from his native Lisbon. Despite having lived far from the court, we see that his theater is fully in line with that of the playwrights of Madrid. From a generic point of view, Cordeiro mainly cultivated palatine comedia, dealing with topics that were in vogue in the theater of the 1620s and 1630s. On the other hand, metrical analysis shows a perfect knowledge of the prevailing versification trends in Spanish theater at that time, to the evolution of which he adapted with ease in serious drama. His mastery of dramatic polymetry even allows him to shine occasionally with unusual and experimental metrical uses.
