The book consists of a university course in contemporary history organised in two sections. The first section examines the events of Europe and other continents with a comparative method and national insights, highlighting the role of economic resources in determining conflicts and political relations. In the second section, the Italian affair, previously framed in general, is described from the state-building process to the present day, following the themes of national identity, politics, and the development of social rights. This way, the dialectic between the development of fundamental values and the resistance to change in politics as well as in the economy and society is identified.
