Against the background of a system of relations between two worlds as different as university and prison, the volume traces the experience of the Prato prison university centre, started in 2000 by the University of Florence, the Penitentiary Administration and the Tuscany Region. In proposing an overall evaluation, the authors discuss the complex redefinition work that university teaching requires in the correctional environment, also with reference to the relationship between study and what the regulations define as "re-educational treatment".

Saverio Migliori is a PhD student in "Quality of Education" at the Department of Sciences of Education and of Cultural and Educational Processes and Research Fellow at the Department of Social Studies of the University of Florence. As part of the research fellowship, he is in charge of monitoring and evaluating the university correctional centre established at the Prison of Prato. Since 1997, he has been carrying out research activities at the Giovanni Michelucci Foundation in Fiesole, where he oversees the creation of the Observatory on correctional structures in Tuscany. He mainly deals with issues related to training in marginal situations and evaluation of the rehabilitation action promoted in prison. Alessandro Margara, former Supervisory Magistrate and President of the Florence Supervisory Court, was General Director of the Penitentiary Administration. He currently is the President of the Giovanni Michelucci Foundation.
