This volume provides a renewed interpretation of the post-Soviet space through the prism of religious heritage. It addresses one of the most distinctive features of the post-Soviet condition, a decisive break from the era in which these now independent states were bound by Soviet rule and the doctrine of state atheism. By addressing the transformation of sacred spaces across Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia from multiple disciplinary perspectives, the book investigates the preservation of religious heritage, the reconstruction of places of worship destroyed during the Soviet period, and the large-scale construction of new religious buildings. These contemporary interventions reinterpret ideas of antiquity, tradition, and identity, shedding light on the cultural and geopolitical transformations defining this strategically important region in today’s global order.
