This essay addresses the problems caused by the existence of ghost-witnesses in the transmission of Spanish Golden Age theatre. Such ‘ghosts’ may be the result of mistaken bibliographical analyses, or they may appear during the constitutio stemmatis process. In particular, stemmata that draw the transmission of the playtexts contained in the Partes de comedias (where the stemma substantially coincides with the so-called ‘real tree’) behave differently from stemmata that reflect the tradition of the sueltas, in which bipartitions and the loss of sub-archetypes are frequent.
