Copies of plays that have come down to us often refer to performances in different cities and at different times, staged by partly or totally different casts, with inevitable adaptations of the text to the new situation. The article suggests that these kinds of variants should be treated differently from the normal variants of tradition, with undoubted advantages for text critics as well.
