This chapter examines Sweezy's analysis of stagflation. It analyzes the debate over monopoly versus maturity, the link between surplus and surplus value, and the role of monopoly in inflation. It highlights the mass debt as a new counter-tendency, as well as the analysis——developed by Sweezy (together with Magdoff)—of the financial explosion and of finance as the system "center of gravity."
