The article analyses the effects of royal powers on the articulation of anthropic, natural and agrarian landscapes from the 9th century onwards. The sample territory analysed corresponds to an area in central-southern Tuscany, characterised by the presence of important resources such as mineral deposits and salt pans. The interest of the public authorities, justified by the resources of this area, clearly shaped the landscapes, thus creating central places on the coastal plain. The policies of exploitation of some of these resources also had an important reflection in the inland hill areas.
