The chapter traces the decline of utopian thought from Marx's critique of socialist fantasists through the Cold War era and the fall of the Soviet Union. While Bloch and Marcuse defend utopia's anticipatory power, Fukuyama's "end of history" signals its apparent exhaustion. The brief revival of '68 notwithstanding, utopia increasingly yields to dystopia, with the city remaining the privileged site of collective disenchantment and social conflict.
