The chapter examines pre-modern utopian imagination, from Augustine's City of God to the medieval myth of Cockaigne — a land of plenty where hunger, labour and pain are abolished. Rooted in the hardships of feudal life, this popular utopia reflects the collective longing of the poor for food, freedom and happiness, finding expression in literature, from Boccaccio to Manzoni, and in art, notably Bruegel's famous painting.
