The discussion on economic planning in Italy in the years of post-war reconstruction is examined from the point of view of its substantial continuity with the debate on corporatism in late Fascism. In this debate, planning stands for a radical transformation of the existing social and political order, so that the whole discussion takes an ideological, abstract and ultimately inconclusive turn. Exceptions to this trend of continuity are found in technocratic fringes of the Catholic social movement and in the attempt of Cesare Dami to alert the economic culture of the Communist Party to the economic calculation approach to planning. The initiatives of both, however, were repressed by the uncongenial political climate of the period.
