The article reflects on the scope of the genealogical-critical method in the edition of Lope de Vega’s theatre developed by the Prolope group over the last 30 years, considering the findings, problems and limits of the method. The importance of heuristics is highlighted, focusing on the editorial typology of the witnesses (the “parte de comedias”), and the multiple, cumulative nature of the methodology necessary to carry out the critical editions is underlined. The essay combines the theoretical perspective with the analysis of specific cases belonging to several plays, for which genealogical trees are proposed and from which the decisions of the editors are analysed. Last but not least, the chapter underlines the methodological validity of Stemmatics, its usefulness and its non-mechanical, but hermeneutic and historical character.
