The study of two songbooks closely associated with the Marquis of Santillana, thoroughly analyzed from an ecdotic perspective, allows us to propose that an authorial manuscript (most likely the case of ms. 2655 or SA8 from the University of Salamanca) is not free from errors—sometimes of a particularly gross nature—that require the editor’s iudicium. In contrast, ms. 80 from the Public Library of Toledo (TO1) raises entirely different issues, as it appears to belong to a little-studied category of songbooks: those compiled by admirers of the great poets, who were well connected with them and had access to high-quality materials. All of this suggests the need for editorial strategies carefully calibrated to each case.
