Enrico Damiani’s life and work have always been strongly characterized by his dual vocation as a librarian and a Slavist. In both of these activities Damiani was always guided by an innate sense of duty and a firm conviction that he had a mission to fulfil: to foster the use of bibliographic resources and to spread knowledge of the languages and literatures of various Slavic countries in Italy. The article retraces some of the main stages of Damiani’s biographical and intellectual journey in order to testify to his unshakeable faith in culture as an instrument of friendship and spiritual fellowship among peoples, capable of enhancing diversity to nurture mutual respect: in this consisted the mission that Damiani, librarian and Slavist, gave himself and honoured until the last moment of his very hard-working life.
