This chapter offers a systematic repertoire of forty-eight causal mechanisms for explaining social change. The mechanisms cover macro-social dynamics, individual resistance and agency, collective action, economic growth, capitalism, institutional functioning, and institutional transformation. Through authors ranging from Tilly, Olson, and Weber to Marx, Hayek, and Boyd and Richerson, the chapter reconstructs recurrent causal sequences, their scope conditions, and their interactions. The result is a comparative toolkit for moving from isolated observations to structured explanations of complex social processes.
